Chief Design Officer @MetaLab
Sara Vienna is Chief Design Officer at Metalab, where she leads Design, Research, and Strategy to ship best-in-class products. Metalab, recently listed as one of Fast Company’s Design Companies of the Year, made its name designing for companies like Slack, Uber, Pitch, Instacart, and Headspace. Her team continues to leave its mark across emerging startups and household names such as Suno, Midjourney, Nike, Pika, and Windsurf.
Her earlier career ran from designing for Benefit Cosmetics to Anthony Bourdain. She advises early stage companies and under-represented founders, and speaks on AI responsibility, craft, and intuition. She's made recent appearances at SXSW, Web Summit, Webflow Conf, and Figma's Leadership Collective. Her work has been recognized by Apple, Awwwards, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, and The Webbys, and centers on craft, judgment, and products worth talking about.
Designing for trust isn't a design problem, it's a conviction problem. It's often in direct conflict with how products get funded and measured. I'll draw from our work (and a little industry lore) on what it actually costs to take trust seriously.
Along with Myles Palmer, we explore how trust is eroded and what responsibility product teams have in shaping that reality. We shared how to create products that earn trust and build real loyalty by by prioritising transparency and human connection.
I explored what it really means to keep humans at the center, as curators, editors and advocates for the end user. Things are moving fast, AI progress won't stop; and I believe we can stop breaking things. The stakes are higher than ever.
Hosted by Wired, our theme of connection and creativity sparked powerful conversations about how technology can build deeper, more meaningful human connections and how to implement real moves in your org.
I shared how design must evolve when interfaces think, predict, and adapt in real time, from brand expression to user behavior. I dug into what creative intuition looks like when working with predictive systems and to evolve design processes today.
Joined AllTrails' product and design teams to talk AI and creativity and a spicy AMA. The questions that stuck: where AI adds real user value vs. slop, what stays manual on purpose, how to earn trust. Human in the loop still wins.
Sat down with Red Bull's product and design teams to talk AI and creativity. The best questions: what stays manual on purpose, how to dodge the sea of sameness, how to prove "this is real." You can serialize rules. You can't serialize judgment.
Figma’s Leadership Collective is their executive community. I joined a conversation at SFMOMA about how AI is reshaping design and what that means for teams and the future of creative work.
The future of our relationship will be shaped by Designers designing for, and with, AI. We’re here to improve the human experience. This talk is a CTA to the humans designing for and with AI to do right by our future and keep the human in loop.
Keynote for builders, VCs, and PMs on designing for our relationship with AI. In addition, moderated a panel on making AI useful, usable, and delightful with heads of design from Google, Slang AI, Chroma.
How do you stand out when everyone has access to the same technology and data sets? By tapping into something that is innately human: intuition. This panel positioned intuition as both a mechanism for confident management and for craft innovation.
10x Designers is a global community for design professionals. Metalab joined forces with 10x Designers to host an open call for portfolio reviews at their conference, giving back to the design community and supporting the next generation of talent.
